About this winery

It was in 1981, when the Swiss couple Brigitte and Bruno Widmer fell in love with each other and purchased the (at the time) abandoned Brancaia estate, Castellina in Chianti. Only two years later, Brancaia made the first rank in an important Chianti Classico tasting and then rapidly gained international recognition. This lead to a continuous extension of the activities resulting in purchasing the Poppi estate (Radda in Chianti) in 1989, followed in 1998 by the founding of Brancaia in Maremma,...

(Vintage 2019)

Currants and sweet berries with hints of cream and vanilla on the nose. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and a fresh, vivid finish. Extremely polished and refined. Drink or hold.

Antonio Galloni, July 2019 (Vintage 2017)

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is bold, forward and resonant, with striking depth and plenty of varietal character. Black cherry, mocha, truffle, leather, spice, menthol and espresso give the 2017 a terrific aromatic intensity and nuance to play off the wine's natural exuberance. Stated more simply, the 2017 is flat-out delicious.

Antonio Galloni, (Vintage 2019)

The 2019 No. 2 is a gorgeous Maremma red from Brancaia. Rich and textured in the glass, the 2019 offers up copious dark cherry, plum, licorice, spice, menthol and chocolate, all in a racy, voluptuous style that can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring. Attractive floral notes lift the finish. This plush, opulent red is all pleasure.

Monica Larner, September 2019 (Vintage 2017)

Brancaia's 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark and thickly concentrated wine  with plenty of black fruit, spice, tar and campfire ash. This was a scorching  hot and dry year, and this wine reminds you of this fact thanks to its  concentration and thick density. There is some sweetness here, in the form  of blackberry syrup and crème de cassis, and the wine's structure is  apparent. Everything is enhanced and enlarged in this vintage. Although the  score is similar, this wine is very different in character to the 2016 vintage.
I've given this wine a shorter drinking window as well. Open it soon with  some lamb and stuffed black olives.

The Brancaia 2018 Maremma Toscana Brancaia N. 2 (a pure Cabernet Sauvignon) sees its fruit sourced from coastal Tuscany, and you can taste that extra ripeness and sun-kissed fruit as a result. The bouquet opens quickly to dark cherry and blackberry, dried cassis and sweet spice. You get a lot of Tuscan sunshine for your buck, and it's worth every last cent, especially if you are enjoying this well-priced wine in a cool, northern climate with some grilled sausage and onions.
