About this winery

Carranco is the product of two completely different wineries, but both capable of producing great wines, pure expression of the land of origin. Borgogno, the oldest winery in Barolo, is still one of the most important and historic producers in the Langhe and of Barolo, while Tornatore, originally from Castiglione di Sicilia, is one of the few remaining native producers on Etna. Product notes

Made with Nerello Mascalese grapes, considered the king of Etna’s native grape varieties. The grapes are grown on the Carranco estate, in vineyards that are about 50 years old. Fermentation occurs in cement tanks at a temperature of 24-26°C (75-79°F). Subsequently, the wines age in big Slavonia oak barrels for 12 months.

Tasting notes

The color is typical, ruby red but not too intense; the nose is fine with clear hints of red fruits, as well as floral, fresh and elegant notes. The mouth-feel is structured and balanced, full-bodied and powerful with fruity hints of strawberry and cherry. Spiced notes of black pepper and rhubarb stand out as well. Lastly, tannin is savory and silky with a lovely length. With time, the wine gains gamey hints and tertiary aromas.

November 2019 (Vintage 2017)

Lots of glazed cherries, Indian spices, watermelon, rhubarb and persimmon. Fine and delicate, this medium-bodied wine has striking elegance and complexity with tons of herbal undertones and nuances of earl-grey and English-breakfast tea. Not the most powerful wine, but certainly makes up for it with its deeply cast flavors. Drink now.
