In 1994, Pablo Eguzkiza and Telmo Rodríguez, along with a third oenologist, created a Garnacha from old bush vineyards in Navarra. The wine was called Alma (soul). Production notes
Identified by the "g" imprinted on the label, it comes from the old name for a wild and rugged region of Toro, long famous as a source of strong wines and fierce bulls (Gago). No use of oak allows this vivid interpretation to show off the flavours of the Tempranillo grape. The vigorous character (a hint of baked earth) combined with the rich generosity of fruit is particularly good with red meat, game or with wild mushrooms.
Toro is known for its undulating terrain, its reddish soil and its beautiful stone formations. It is situated in remote Castille, where the Duero river meanders among canyons before entering Portugal as the Douro. At the end of the 1990s, Toro started to be discovered once again, mostly because the influence of nearby Ribera del Duero. Unlike the latter, the Toro area can draw on a wealth of old vineyards. Telmo and partner Pablo Eguzkiza are part of Toro's renaissance. The direct planting, without American rootstocks, allowed them to explore Tempranillo intimately in its purest expression. It's the continuation of a study that has been underway since the 1980s.
