About this winery

El Enemigo, “the enemy”. The struggle that most defines us in our lives is the one that we wage with our selves. We are all our own worst enemies. This is the credo behind the name on the label. The wines of El Enemigo are enigmatic, charismatic, and verging on iconoclastic. In that way the wines reflect their maker, Alejandro Vigil, an almost Picasso-like personality. “Ale”, as he is known, is the head winemaker at the iconic Bodega Catena Zapata, but he has many loves. This is very smoky and earthy with dried mushrooms and wet earth. Dried-citrus undertone. Medium-bodied, super long and fine. Meaty and fluid and gorgeous. Drink now. 3,000 bottles made from a small parcel of old vines.

Vinous

Stephen Tanzer, September 2019 (Vintage 2016)

Bright red-ruby. Aromas of blackberry, bitter chocolate, black olive, licorice and menthol. Densely packed but quite vinous; a step up in energy and definition from the Bonarda El Mirador, boasting nicely integrated acidity. There's a light greenness here but also lovely violet lift. Finishes with a good ripe dusting of tannins, a suggestion of black pepper and excellent length. A fresh Bonarda with noteworthy vinosity, this wine nicely combines dark raspberry fruit and subtle salinity. And my sample did very well in the recorked bottle, gaining in sweetness and pliancy. (winemaker Alejandro Vigil noted that the supplier of this fruit is 90 years old and still tends his three-hectare vineyard)

Ripe berry aromas include desiccated notes of raisin and prune, but even so this Bonarda doesn't smell cooked or overripe. A plump body is friendly and smooth, while oaky berry flavors are pleasing even if they lack intensity and length on the finish.
