About this winery

Founded in 1825, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy's greatest domaines. Originally the company was a classic negotiant business, based in Nuits St. Georges and engaged in the buying and selling of wine but not the production of it. After seven generations of steadily acquiring properties throughout the Cotes de Nuits, the Cotes de Beaune, Cotes Chalonnaise and now Chablis, the Faiveley family have established themselves as the most important vineyard owners in Burgundy, with 120 hectares of...

Faiveley's 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers is very promising indeed, mingling aromas of smoky berry fruit and plums with hints of rose hip, orange peel, musk and spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's concentrated and vibrant, with velvety tannins, lively acids and a long, perfumed finish.

Faiveley's two parcels both face south, but the cool breezes that run through the Combe de Lavaux temper the sunshine in years like 2018. Typically fresh and aromatic, this has enticing raspberry coulis and red cherry flavours, textured tannins and some underlying salinity and minerality. The 50% new wood is finely integrated here.

In contrast to the prior wines, here the nose is quite firmly reduced. More interesting are the superbly concentrated and gorgeously textured big-bodied, powerful and muscular flavors that flash a mix of minerality and salinity on the wonderfully complex and highly persistent finish where the only nit is a slight warmth. This is potentially outstanding and a wine that should age effortlessly.

Charming and classy, this red is lush and saturated with black cherry, blackberry, earth and a hint of tobacco flavors. It's balanced, turning firmer midpalate, with powdery tannins lining the tangy finish. An accent of iron creeps in at the end. Best from 2024 through 2042. 3,300 cases made, 270 cases imported.

Il s'affranchira vite de son élevage pour libérer un fruit très sain, sa matière offre beaucoup d'envergure et se prolonge sur de petits amers d'écorce d'agrumes.

Charles Curtis, (Vintage 2019)

Faiveley has a large holding in Cazetiers at 4.06ha and the oldest vines were planted in the 1950s. The fruit for this bottling is completely destemmed and yet there is a slightly exotic aroma here, plus a robust, dark fruit character. The tannins are supple and well-managed, recalling Morey more than Gevrey.

Neal Martin, (Vintage 2019)

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru does not quite possess the intensity and drive of the Lavaux Saint-Jacques, coming across rather static by comparison. The palate is medium-bodied with elegant dark berry fruit and a harmonious, briny finish that completes this Les Cazetiers with style. I suspect the nose just needs some time to awaken and get its act together

Neal Martin, January 2020 (Vintage 2018)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St-Jacques 1er Cru offers attractive brambly black fruit mixed with truffle and sage on the nose. This is well focused and delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit laced with spice, a pinch of white pepper with a fine grip on the finish. Worth seeking out.

December 2019 (Vintage 2018)

Barrel sample. Mid crimson. Sweet dark-red fruit with some peppery oak spice (approximately 50% new and 50% two-year-old barrels for all the Faiveley premier cru reds). More savoury on the palate. One of the least charming wines at this stage but also one of the most refined in structure. The extraction of the tannins is so well judged to match the hidden but present fruit.

Matière assez ample et moelleuse dans Cazetiers, qui peine un peu à se départir du marqueur du bois très présent en finale.

Barrel sample. Toasty oak frames this gentle, easy charmer. Good freshness lifts this solid performer. Cherry fruit.
