About this winery

Founded in 1825, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy's greatest domaines. Originally the company was a classic negotiant business, based in Nuits St. Georges and engaged in the buying and selling of wine but not the production of it. After seven generations of steadily acquiring properties throughout the Cotes de Nuits, the Cotes de Beaune, Cotes Chalonnaise and now Chablis, the Faiveley family have established themselves as the most important vineyard owners in Burgundy, with 120 hectares of...

Product notes

The term "Les Damodes" makes reference to the Druidesses who previously inhabited the area. These vines are planted at high altitude, bordering Vosne-Romanée, and produce a mineral wine with very delicate tannins. A smooth and very feminine wine!

Production notes

The grapes are harvested and sorted by hand. The proportion of de-stemmed grapes and whole clusters varies depending on the vintage. The wines are punched down daily in order to extract colour, tannins and aromas from the skin of the grapes. After a 19 day vatting period, the alcoholic fermentation is complete. The free-run wine is run off using a gravity system whilst the marc is pressed slowly and gently in order to extract an exceptionally pure press wine. The wines are aged for 16 months in French oak barrels (40-50% new oak and 50-60% one-wine barrels) which have been selected for their fine grain and moderate toast. The wines are left to age in our hygrometry-controlled cellars at consistent, natural temperatures.

Tasting notes

Deep ruby red hue. The expressive nose opens up with black fruits, spice and subtle toasted notes. The attack is elegant and refined and the palate is characterized by floral notes and a touch of mocha. Serve with Beef tartare, deer stew, hard cheeses.

William Kelley, (Vintage 2019)

Aromas of cassis, plums, orange rind and spicy new oak preface Faiveley's 2019 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes, a medium to full-bodied, deep and lively wine with a concentrated core of fruit, framed by powdery tannins. Concluding with a long, mineral finish, it's another fine bottling from this cool, high-altitude and northeast-exposed site.

(Vintage 2019)

Spicy aromas of dark raspberry, cherry and earth give way to impressively voluminous yet sleek middle weight flavors that display lovely delineation on the austere finish. This possesses good if not stunning length as it eventually falls off due to the fact that the tannins become a bit angular. With that said, I suspect that the overall sense of harmony will improve as the tannins resolve.

Neal Martin, (Vintage 2019)

The 2019 Nuits Saints-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru has a soft, supple bouquet, the 100% destemming lending freshness and sensuality, and a little brine emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, touches of blood orange and orange peel lacing the dark berry and spicy notes toward the finish. Give this 3–5 years in bottle.

November 2019 (Vintage 2018)

Barrel sample. Soft-rimmed cherry red. More fragrant than the Pruliers and less marked by the oak on the nose. The tannins are more silky too, but definite and sufficient, the fruit brighter.

(Vintage 2019)

Barrel sample. Fresh and intriguing on the nose. Lots of energy here and something pretty solid even if not ethereal. With the fine tannins well tucked in behind the stolid blackberry fruit. The sort of wine you could order confidently from a wine list anywhere in the world. (Do I hear the whisper of faint praise …?)
