About this winery

The winery was established in 1986 in La Morra, a town in the heart of the Langhe that has always been renowned for the greatness of its vineyards, some of which were mentioned in town records going back as far as 1250. They began with 2 hectares, and over the years have managed to acquire the most prestigious, historic crus for the production of Barolo, such as La Serra, Brunate, Cerequio, Sarmassa, Rocche dell'Annunziata and Fossati, and excellent vineyards for Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo and...

Product notes

This is an Italian cult winery at its finest. Some particulars of the Voerzio winery are low production and very little wine for our, or any, market and high high scores with all wine publications and journalists. He’s a modernist to the extent that he fashions his wine away from the traditional tannic Barolo style. The wines are not over-extracted and oaky. There is an eager market for Barolo, and good Barolos are never inexpensive so unsurprisingly Voerzio’s top wines are trophy items. La Serra is the most concentrated and richest of Roberto Voerzio’s Barolos.

Tasting notes

With its high altitude and stony structure, La Serra boasts an altogether more powerful and brooding style of Barolo. Very focussed with concentration, the nose still exudes perfume and wild Nebbiolo fruit but with a deep flavour profile and mineral complexity.

August 2021 (Vintage 2017)

Sweet berry with light tar and hazelnut on the nose. It’s full-bodied with creamy, chewy tannins that are fine-grained and lead you down to a long, energetic finish. It goes on and on. Drink after 2025

Antonio Galloni, (Vintage 2014)

The 2014 La Serra is another knockout wine from Roberto Voerzio. La Serra is a site that tends to produce nervous, slightly angular wines. In 2014, though, Voerzio manages to temper some of that tannic edge. Dark cherry and plum fruit are nicely rendered in this surprisingly silky, unctuous Barolo. Blood orange, spice, menthol and licorice grow in the glass as the wine's upper register begins to emerge over time. This is a remarkably harmonious young Barolo.
