En 1994, Pablo Eguzkiza et Telmo Rodríguez, de concert avec un troisième œnologue, ont vinifié un grenache issu de vieux vignobles de la Navarre. Le vin a été baptisé Alma (âme). C’est ainsi que l’entreprise a vu le jour, sous le nom de Compañía de Vinos de La Granja. Ce nom était une déclaration d’intention : il révélait que l’entreprise produirait d’autres vins et se voulait un hommage à La Granja, la célèbre verrerie, un centre exceptionnel d’artisanat espagnol...

Vignoble en terrasses situé entre 550 et 725 mètres d'altitude au-dessus de la rivière Bibei, sur des pentes abruptes orientées au nord-ouest. Sols peu profonds, acides et à texture grossière. Levures indigènes. Élaboration dans de petites cuves en bois et vieillissement doux pendant 12 mois dans des foudres en bois.
De couleur cerise brillante, des arômes d'herbes, d'épices, de poivres, de balsamiques et de fruits rouges. En bouche, une belle acidité relevé d'épices et de fruits séchés.
Quite subtle and reserved with blue-fruit, iodine and white-pepper character. It’s medium-to full-bodied with a tight, reserved palate and ultra fine and light, chewy tannins that go on for minutes. Better in 2022.

A single-vineyard wine from As Ermitas in Valdeorras, the 2018 O Diviso was produced with a field blend of Mencía, Garnacha, Mouratón and Caíño from 1.2 hectares of old vines on granite slopes on the banks of the Bibei River overlooking the Ermitas hermitage. It fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts and, like all the reds from this zone, had a gentle élevage in a neutral 600-liter oak barrel for 14 months. This is the more reticent of the single-vineyard reds from 2018, from a cooler place and the last grapes to be picked. Having only one barrel doesn't give you a lot of room for blending. The palate is round and textured, with more clout and a little more tannin, and it feels like the wine is going to need a little more time. Unfortunately, there are only 680 bottles of this. It was bottled in June 2020.

The 2017 O Diviso is only the fourth vintage from a vineyard in the zone of As Ermitas. They have been recovering and replanting a 1.2-hectare plot with a field blend of Mencía, Garnacha, Mouratón and some Caíño to complete the 2.9 hectares that have been replanted. This fermented with indigenous yeasts in small oak vats followed by one year in oak foudres. It's only 13% alcohol and has soft acidity. For Pablo Eguzkiza, this wine is always different; it has more tension and is subtler, more serious, very long and with finesse, a more refined version of As Caborcas. This is their highest-altitude vineyard and the one they harvest last. The wine has restraint and complexity, the combination of old vines and a long cycle even in an early year like 2017. Production has been slowly growing, and even though 2017 was a low-yielding year, they managed to produce a record 1,170 bottles. It was bottled in June 2019.

So much spice to this with blackberries and dried flowers. Full-bodied and layered with dried berries and stone. Pepper, too. Subtle and intense. Drink now.
