Felton Road exploite quatre propriétés totalisant 32 ha dans la sous-région de la sous-région de Bannockburn dans l'Otago central. Calvert Vineyard est situé sur Felton Road, à seulement 1 km à l'est de The Elms Vineyard et de la cave. Le sol de Calvert sont des limons lourds et profonds avec une fine couche de de terre végétale. Une gestion estivale méticuleuse d'une seule canopée positionnée verticalement (VSP) assure une une maturité homogène et précoce des fruits. L'éclaircissement des pousses, le positionnement des pousses, l'effeuillage, l'éclaircissage des grappes et la récolte sont toutes effectuées à la main pour garantir une qualité optimale des fruits. Des cultures de couverture sont plantées entre les rangs pour aider à pour contrôler la vigueur de la vigne et améliorer la santé du sol et la biodiversité générale.
Un nez floral et délicieusement parfumé engage et passionne immédiatement. Un fruit doux fruit sucré ouvre le palais exposant des couches de de cerise noire, d'épices et de notes terreuses complexes. Ce sentiment d'immédiateté et d'ouverture est rapidement tempérée par ses tanins structurés et minéraux : une sensation en bouche caractéristique des sols limoneux profonds et lourds de Calvert. Ils apportent une stature et un sérieux à la proposition : contemplative et sincère.
A very vibrant and ripe Calvert with attractively spicy oak integration, as well as abundant red and dark cherries. Super fragrant. The palate is so silky and plush, packed with concentrated, fresh red-cherry flavor. Blueberry finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The 2020 Pinot Noir Calvert may initially seem smooth and refined, but there's no escaping its sense of power; it packs a punch with its concentrated core and structured tannic frame. While you'll find cherry-like fruit and a floral lift, there's a distinctly savory edge to this vintage, which displays Worcestershire sauce, spice and fruitcake alongside herbal notes. It achieves a wonderful balance between the core of ripe fruit and the powerful structure. A Calvert has the brawn to age and will benefit from more time in bottle.
Dense, dark, brambly fruit flavors at the core expand to loam, white pepper, dried herb, tobacco and black tea notes and muscular tannins that firm up on the long finish, where all the elements find harmony. Drink now through 2032. 1,281 cases made, 91 cases imported.

This is a pup of a Pinot Noir, full of youthful vigor. In addition to its floral and cherry-infused nose, there is a bouquet garni of woody herbs, which could be partly explained by a 25% whole bunch component, as well as in-bunch variation, which was a signature of this vintage at Felton Road, according to winemaker Blair Walter. While silken and satisfying, there is an innate energy and this youthful expression has a brace of gravelly tannins that build toward the end. The sinewy, fragrant and fresh finish provides line and length. Far too young to be approaching. Give it a minimum of 2 years to get into its groove.

Fruit from Calvert Vineyard (vine age 17 years). 25% whole cluster. 16 months' élevage in 30% new oak. From a vineyard on pedogenic lime – see Central Otago – digging deep by Julia. The Felton Road team view Calvert as producing particularly intense wines.
And indeed the nose is very intense, with notes of candied flowers and a hint of beetroot. Quite a grip on the back palate which makes me suggest you hold off drinking this for a year or so. There was little tannic grip on the Bannockburn or the Cornish Point. Almost burly but, thankfully, not at all surly. This should bloom beautifully in bottle if you're patient but it's a little sweeter than most burgundies.
