History The Libéral family founded the estate at the beginning of the 18th century. Generation after generation, they succeeded in forming a vineyard consisting of some of the best soil in Pauillac. This magnificent vineyard recaptured its youth in 1960 when the Cruse family acquired the property. The Cruses then implemented a replanting plan. Château Haut Bages Libéral was included among the fifth growths in the 1855 classification. Since the arrival of the Villars family in 1983, Haut Bages Libéral has gradually recovered its formal glory. Today, the property is run by Claire Villars Lurton who modernized the winemaking facilities and introduced new, environmentally-friendly methods. Terroir The vineyard spreads over 30 hectares and half of its area is located right next to Château Latour. The other part of the vineyard is on the plateau of Bages, South of Pauillac. The vineyard of the estate is located on 2 sets. One is made of deep gravels and the other of clay-limestone and limestone chalk soils. The type of soil gives the wine its power and mineral character. Much of these good lands overlook the estuary of the Gironde. The gravels were carried by the river from the Pyrenees during the Quaternary. The vineyard sits on a limestone source rock.
