About this winery

Founded by a successful Finnish sea Captain, Gustave Niebaum, in the 1880’s, Inglenook Estate in Rutherford California was once the most highly regarded of the earliest, great Napa Valley estate wineries. Over the years the estate passed through the hands of Niebaum’s descendants. Eventually the family started to sell off plots of the historic homestead. Even the proud name was put on the market in 1964 and sold to a corporation as merely a brand name. But in 1975, Francis Ford Coppola...

Product notes

1882 was the first vintage produced by Inglenook founder Gustave Niebaum. That same year, Niebaum dug a small cave into the Mayacamas foothills on the back property of the estate in his quest for optimal barrel aging conditions. This wine pays tribute to Captain Niebaum, whose spirit of innovation and exploration continues to live on at Inglenook. 18 Months : 15% New French Oak, 85% Neutral French and American Oak

Tasting notes

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon 1882 offers splendid aromas of blueberry and cassis with highlights of anise, savory fines herbes, and red cherry. Finely grained tannins enhance a complex, yet polished structure that finishes fresh and vibrant, with a mysterious hint of mocha.

(Vintage 2017)

A small production, Cabernet-dominated blend that gives ripe red plum and black cherry flavours, tightly wound but wrapped in silky tannins - meaning this has a power to it but in a more accessible delivery. Confident and spiced with flavour and plenty of signature Inglenook balance. Named after the year Gustave Niebaum delivered the first vintage of his new Rutherford estate. 15% new French oak, the rest one-fill barrels both French and American.

Antonio Galloni, (Vintage 2016)

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon 1882 is persistent and nicely layered. Like so many 2016s, the 1882 comes across as quite youthful relative to how this wine has shown in previous vintages at a similar stage in its evolution. Today, it is the wine's length and silkiness that make me most hopeful for the future. There is good depth to the fruit, but also an attractive element of restraint.

May 2017 (Vintage 2015)

A soft and fruity wine with chocolate, walnuts and hints of cedar. Full body and round and velvety tannins. Very pretty.
