Macan and Macan Classico wines are the result of an encounter between Spain’s most prestigious winery, Vega Sicilia, and the owner of the legendary Château Lafite in Bordeaux, Benjamin de Rothschild. Research and purchase of 30 to 90 years old vines in the heart of Rioja Alavesa has lasted 8 years. Today, the joint-venture grows 80 hectares of old vines and produces 300 000 bottles annually. Both families own another 35 hectares of young vines that will be used later to produce wine, when they reach their peak of ripeness. The local oenologist Fernando Remírez de Ganuza is in charge of the winemaking. The property named Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia is located in the commune of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Released on the market for the first time in 2012, the production of the fist vintage, 2009, is the fruit of 4 years of hard work.
