About this winery

Turley Wine Cellars makes thirty-four wines, the vast majority of which are single vineyard designate Zinfandels and Petite Syrahs. By focusing on old vine vineyards in particular, Turley aims to both create and preserve California’s unique winemaking culture. All of our vineyards are either certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers or somewhere in the process, and we use all natural yeasts in the fermentations.

Product notes

The vines are head-trained and dry-farmed, the soil plays the most important role in distinguishing this vineyard on the west side of Paso Robles. The wines have a brightness, and chalk and floral characteristic aromas unique to the site, and to Zinfandel in general.

Tasting notes

Tons of vibrant, ripe red fruits on the nose, with an uplifting hint of the chalky soils; like eating your favorite afterschool raspberry jam snack while there’s still chalk dust on your fingers. The plentiful and powerful warm fruits on the palate are balanced by one of the freshest, highest natural acidities found in any red wine, leading to a satisfyingly nimble texture.

Antonio Galloni, October 2018 (Vintage 2017)

Turley's 2017 Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard offers plenty of the exuberance that is typical of Paso Robles wines. Dark red/purplish fruit, chocolate, rose petal and lavender flesh out in this supple, incredibly inviting Zinfandel. The 2017 finishes with notable substance and depth to round things out.

  • The 2019 Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard has turned out beautifully. It captures all of the richness and power of Paso Robles while retaining terrific brightness and vibrancy. Sweet black cherry, plum, leather, spice and tobacco all build in this deep, potent Zinfandel from Turley. The 2019 is just fabulous.

Erin Brook, March 2019 (Vintage 2017)

The Pesenti vineyard was planted in the 1920s on limestone soils. Deep ruby in color, the 2017 Zinfandel Pesenti Vineyard gives savory notes of charcuterie over dried brambly fruits and crushed black cherries with hints of dried soil. Medium to full-bodied, it offers savory-laced fruits in the mouth with soft, grainy tannins and great freshness, finishing long with pretty dried flowers notes.

February 2020 (Vintage 2017)

Dynamic yet sleekly elegant for a Zinfandel, with refined black cherry, grilled anise and pepper flavors that build speed and energy toward polished tannins. Drink now through 2029.

Clare Tooley MW, October 2021 (Vintage 2019)

Jewel ruby colour, pale and glinting. Expressive and intense aromas of red, black and blue fruit – a true Zinfandel cornucopia, heady with rose petal, incense, raspberry cane and gingerbread. The palate is broad, creamy, all-encompassing, massive. Beautiful compote fruit flavours marry with coffee oak notes. Dark, smooth, viscous and moreish, this is a truly serious wine. It's whopping nearly 16% alcohol is checked, perhaps surprisingly, by the sheer fruit content and retained acidity which ensures freshness amid the intensity. I'd open and enjoy it now and over the next decade. It may have the structure to hold but there’s something intensely engaging about the wine right now, in its full, youthful throttle.

June 2021 (Vintage 2019)

This certified organic estate-owned vineyard in Paso Robles was planted in the 1920s on ancient marine calcareous soils. Though the vines are head-trained and dry-farmed, the soil plays the most important role in distinguishing this vineyard on the west side of Paso Robles. The wine is fermented with ambient yeast. Aged for 15 months in a mix of 80% used oak barrels, 20% new, of which 80% are French oak and 20% American. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Heady, sweet, berry nose with quite tart acidity sticking out. Quite a style to get used to but this is a faithful rendition of it.
