About this winery

It was in 1981, when the Swiss couple Brigitte and Bruno Widmer fell in love with each other and purchased the (at the time) abandoned Brancaia estate, Castellina in Chianti. Only two years later, Brancaia made the first rank in an important Chianti Classico tasting and then rapidly gained international recognition. This lead to a continuous extension of the activities resulting in purchasing the Poppi estate (Radda in Chianti) in 1989, followed in 1998 by the founding of Brancaia in Maremma,...

Product notes

The Chianti Classico – the only Brancaia red wine that is made without wood – pays homage to our terroir. After twelve months of aging in steel and cement, this wine offers great drinking pleasure at an early age. Continental climate, with cool winters (also below 0°C) and very warm summers. Temperatures can rise above 40°C during the warm season.

Tasting notes

This single origin Sangiovese fascinates with its lightness and its fine cherry notes – typical Sangiovese aromas. It is a beautiful Chianti with a straightforwardness that is captivating. Here, too, we like to let Monica Larner (Robert Parker) have a say. She wrote about Chianti Classico 2014: “Brancaia is primarily known for its excellent results with international grape varieties, but it also manages to produce first-class Sangiovese.”

(Vintage 2019)

A beautiful Chianti Classico with blackberry, black-cherry and light chocolate character. Medium to full body, round and polished tannins and a long finish. So delicious now. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.

(Vintage 2019)

As always with Brancaia’s Chianti Classicos, this brings together fruit from the estate’s original holdings in Castellina with grapes from its Radda property. The 2019 really expresses the high altitude, cooler microclimate of the latter with fragrant florals, fresh mint and crisp red berries. It is vibrant, fluid and quenching in its acidity, while dusty red cherry and fine chalky tannins add intrigue. I love the purity of this 100% unoaked Sangiovese
