About this winery

At heart, Catena is a story about family. Family who poured their lives, passion and spirit into transforming scrub-laden desert into some of the most beautiful and unique vineyards in the world. Family that passed their knowledge from generation to generation, blending collective memory with state-of-the-art science from the new world of viticulture. Family who, through risk-taking, faith and a little luck, transformed their treasured Mendoza terroir into the fountainhead of the award-winning...

Notes about product

At almost 5,000 feet elevation in the Andean foothills, the Adrianna vineyard's calcareous soils and cool climate are the promised land of Chardonnay. The fruit from the Adrianna vineyard has a purity of flavors and a minerality that is particular to this vineyard and can not be found anywhere else in Mendoza. The nearby, gravel-covered Domingo Vineyard makes up 20% of the blend.

Tasting notes

The Catena Alta Chardonnay presents an intenese greenish-yellow color. The nose offers ripe white fruit aromas such as pears and peaches that are interwoven with delicate citrus and floral notes, such as Jasmine. The palate shows rich and concentrated ripe pear, apple and apricot flavors with a light note of minerality. The wine finishes long and complex with crisp, mineral acidity.

The excellent, subtle and elegant 2018 Catena Alta Chardonnay had a shy nose that took some time in the glass to take off. It's more subtle than in-your-face, and the palate is super elegant, with much better integrated oak than previous vintages. There is great freshness and very good acidity that comes through as pure, crystalline and focused, with a mineral mouthfeel.

Bright medium yellow. Aromas of passion fruit, white peach and menthol are complicated by subtle floral and saline nuances. Quite refined in its grain, with pronounced saline minerality and tangy acidity nicely buffering its subtle fruit sweetness. Lovely silky umami texture and a long finish. There's a lot going on here, but this very rich, silky, classically dry wine is still youthfully inexpressive, with its fruit a bit suppressed in the early going. Winemaker Alejandro Vigil notes that this is a perfect wine to serve with sweetbreads.

I love the pear, licorice and vanilla aromas. Clarity and elegance. The finish lingers long and gently pulls you back for more. Drink now.
