About this winery

Domaine Jean Grivot is one of Burgundy's greatest small family estates, and their story is a classic Burgundy family story. They were one of the first families in Vosne Romanee to bottle and sell their own wine, beginning in the 1930's. The estate has been run by fifth-generation vigneron Etienne Grivot since 1987 with his wife Marielle. The domaine is an impressive 15ha in total, but in classic 'small is beautiful' Burgundian fashion it takes little bits of 22 different appellations to cobble...

Enticing and intense aromas of black cherry, black currant, mint and spicy oak mark this rich red. It's open and inviting, with fine harmony and length

Even at the village level, the 2018 wines from Grivot are intense and beautiful. Enticing nose with ripe raspberries, cherries and crushed violets. Suave on the palate and quite intense with velvety tannins and a lingering finish. One of the best Vosne-Romanée village reds I tried in 2018. Destemmed and matured for 18 months in barrique, 25% new.

This blend of grapes from a series of village-level parcels is by far the largest production at Grivot and it is just what you would want from a Vosne-Romanée. Lieux-dits include Aux Champs Perdrix at the top of the slope, Aux Réas, as well as others further down from the premiers crus. The blend delivers very expressive red berry fruit, firmly grippy tannins and a velvety texture on the palate that is a delight.

Allen Meadows, (Vintage 2018)

A more elegant and certainly spicier and cooler nose slowly reveals its array of various red berries and exotic tea scents. There is reasonably good energy to the medium-bodied flavors that possess a rich and caressing mouthfeel that terminate in delicious, exuberant and almost gulpable finish. This highly seductive effort will almost undoubtedly tighten up once it's bottled.

Jancis Robinson, (Vintage 2016)

A blend from 12 different vineyards – 20% on white soils near Nuits-St-George and 80% behind their house in the middle of the village and north of it.
Bright cherry red. Soars out of the glass. Very sweet start but lots of energy. Very pure. Chalky texture on the end. Crunchy fruit.
