About this winery

Founded in 1825, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy's greatest domaines. Originally the company was a classic negotiant business, based in Nuits St. Georges and engaged in the buying and selling of wine but not the production of it. After seven generations of steadily acquiring properties throughout the Cotes de Nuits, the Cotes de Beaune, Cotes Chalonnaise and now Chablis, the Faiveley family have established themselves as the most important vineyard owners in Burgundy, with 120 hectares of...

Production notes

The grapes are harvested and sorted by hand. The proportion of de-stemmed grapes and whole clusters varies depending on the vintage. The wines were punched down daily in order to extract colour, tannins and aromas from the skin of the grapes. After a 19 day vatting period, the alcoholic fermentation was vcompleted. The free-run wine is run off using a gravity system whilst the marc was pressed slowly and gently in order to extract an exceptionally pure press wine. The wines were aged for 16-18 months in French oak barrels (60% new oak and 40% one-wine barrels) which have been selected for their fine grain and moderate toast. The wines are then left to age in hygrometry-controlled cellars at consistent, natural temperatures.

Tasting notes

Deep ruby red with complex fruity and floral notes (rose, violet) and a subtle hint of oak on the nose. The attack is smooth with powerful tannins. This well-structured and very persistent wine is an honour to the reputation of this exceptional Grand Cru. Serve with duck breast with mushrooms, game, soft cheeses.

Stephen Tanzer, January 2018 (Vintage 2016)

(Faiveley vinified the old vines separately but then assembled them with the rest): Bright ruby-red. Alluring floral nose combines blackberry, black raspberry, violet and licorice. A savory and rather refined young Clos Vougeot, offering subtle notes of dark berries, flowers and earth rather than this grand cru's more typical black cherry and herb qualities. Nothing rustic about this highly promising Clos Vougeot!

William Kelley, January 2019 (Vintage 2016)

The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru opens in the glass with an attractive bouquet of dark berries, red cherries, smoked meats and rich, loamy soil. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, succulent but tight-knit, with a nicely concentrated core of sapid fruit, racy acids and fine-grained but youthfully chewy tannins. It's one of the more reserved wines in the range, but it also doesn't appear to possess the plenitude or completeness of Faiveley's most successful cuvées in the 2016 vintage.

November 2017 (Vintage 2016)

Cask sample. Light to mid crimson. Ripe and dark, almost a little savoury, but there’s lovely red fruit too. Dark-fruited and chewy on the palate, firm but rounded. Dark chocolate on the finish. (JH)
