About this winery

The story of Kumeu River Wines began to unfold in 1937 with the first generation of the Brajkovich family to arrive in New Zealand; Mick and Katé and their three children, daughters Franka and Nevenka, and son Maté. Product notes

Kumeu River Chardonnay is drawn from six different vineyard sites in the Kumeu Region. We are particularly careful in selecting only the very best grapes from these vineyards for our Kumeu River Estate label.

James Suckling

- 95 points -

James Suckling, January 2022 (Vintage 2020)

Intense and complex chardonnay with lemons and peaches, as well as pastry and fresh cream. The palate is stacked with ripe-peach flavor and fresher, citrus tones and has complex, layered texture. Classy wine. Drink now. Screw cap.

Vinous

- 91 points -

Rebecca Gibb MW, April 2021 (Vintage 2020)

There's a sense of calm to the 2020 Chardonnay Estate, a blend of six different sites. It is mellow, offering a plump cushion of Chardonnay goodness on the midpalate but not becoming heavy nor opulent, its youthful edge and fresh acidity tying it together into a precise finish. It offers classic subtle Chardonnay characters of Golden Delicious apple, white nectarine and a mere whiff of oak-derived smokiness. Well constructed, satisfying and elegant.

Jancis Robinson, September 2021 (Vintage 2020)

Whole-bunch pressed, eight weeks in burgundy barrels (20% new), malo. Aged 11 months in barrel on lees without racking. Bottled April 2021. RS 2 g/l, TA 6 g/l, pH 3.15, SO2 total 134 mg/l, free 38 mg/l. Screwcap.
Pure citrus – both grapefruit and lemon – with a slight smoky/reductive note. Gorgeous mix of vineyard/fruit purity and careful winemaking. Deep, long, creamy and fresh. A way to go.
