Product notes

The Laborde Syrah vineyard was planted by a double massal selection of Syrah vines brought back from France´s Rhone Valley over half century ago by renowed viticulturist, Luis Laborde.

Tasting notes

Beautiful deep purple color. Aromas of cigar, leather, and smoked meat fill the nose with hints of toasty oak, forest floor and baking spice. Sweet tannins support big fruit flavors of blackberry jam, black spiced cherries with a hint of rhubarb.

2020 (Vintage 2018)

Blackberries, black pepper and cloves on the nose, following through to a medium to full body, juicy fruit and a delicious finish of savory fruit. Umami at the end. Drink or hold.

(Vintage 2019)

Aromas of wild blackberry, tobacco leaf, peppercorn and asphalt. It’s full-bodied with firm, tight tannins and fresh acidity. Structured and concentrated with a refreshingly cool, inky finish. Very fine tannins. Spicy clove and black pepper to the black fruit. Better from 2022.

(Vintage 2019)

Joaquin Hidalgo , (Vintage 2019)

The 2019 Syrah Laborde Double Select from La Consulta, Uco Valley was aged for 12 months in French barrels, 35% of them new. A dark purple in color, the attractive, liqueur-like aromas include ripe blackberry, oak and a touch of black pepper. In the mouth, it’s smooth and austere with a fleshy feel lent by the wood and a freshness packaged in the oak with a gentle, juicy flow and fruity finish. A flavorful, new world red.

There were jammy notes of raspberry in the nose of the 2019 Laborde Double Select Syrah, produced with grapes from a massal selection made by Luis Laborde. It matured in French oak barrels, 35% of them new, for 12 months. It has ripe fruit and faint varietal notes of black olives and violets. It's medium-bodied, and the tannins are fine. It finishes with a faint bitter twist. 37,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2020.

Luis Gutiérrez, October 2019 (Vintage 2018)

As with the other wines where I tasted two vintages, I prefer the 2018 Laborde Double Select Syrah to the 2017. I find more varietal character, more definition and better freshness here. There is juicy fruit and more polished tannins, a dry finish and clean flavors. 36,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2019.

Stephen Tanzer, September 2019 (Vintage 2018)

Full ruby-red. Dark raspberry, licorice, oak char, black pepper and a whiff of violet on the nose. Juicy, moderately dense and ripe, with integrated acidity giving definition to the dark berry, licorice and expresso flavors. Not a particularly wild style of Syrah but showed some leather and game nuances as it opened in the glass. Offers an attractive balance of vinosity and restrained sweetness, finishing with firm, dusty tannins and lingering notes of mocha and black pepper. This lightly saline, fine-grained wine is still tightly coiled but has the spine to unwind over the next four or five years.
