About this winery

The history of the Vietti winery traces its roots back to the 19th Century. Only at the beginning of the 20th century, however, did the Vietti name become a winery offering its own wines in bottle. Patriarch Mario Vietti, starting from 1919 made the first Vietti wines, selling most of the production in Italy. His most significant achievement was to transform the family farm, engaged in many fields, into a grape-growing and wine-producing business. Then, in 1952, Alfredo Currado (Luciana...

Product notes

The grapes are harvested from the cru vineyard Masseria, located in Neive, with 4.600 plants per hectare of 40 years old and grown with guyot system. The surface of the vineyard is 1,4 hectare. Calcareous-clayey soil. South exposure. The must rests for 13 days in open stainless steel tanks at 30 to 32° C for the alcoholic fermentation, with frequent “delestage”, punching down, open air pumping-over.

Tasting notes

Pale ruby color, slight garnet hue, with intense aromas of ripe bing cherries with intricate complexities of minerals, tea leaves and rose petals. With firm, ripe tannins, crisp acidity and feminine and round structure, this Barberesco shows incredible finesse with excellent balance, integration and a long, lingering finish.

Antonio Galloni, (Vintage 2006)

The 2006 Barbaresco Masseria is focused and energetic in its ripe red fruits, menthol, spices and minerals. There is lovely depth in the glass, not to mention tons of balance. This is a beautiful, poised Barbaresco from Vietti. The Masseria will require considerable patience but its balance is impeccable. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. Vietti’s commitment to quality across their entire range is commendable. I can’t think of too many estates that can match Vietti for the number of utterly delicious bottlings that emerge from these cellars in Castiglione Falletto. Both 2006 and 2007 are highly successful vintages for the estate’s Barberas. In recent years Vietti has moved towards a greater use of large, neutral oak for their Barberas and, as these wines amply show, the results are striking. These pure Barberas are exceptional from top to bottom, and even better, they are utterly divine at the dinner table.

Stephen Tanzer, (Vintage 2006)

Good deep red. Medicinal cherry and violet on the nose, with a hint of nuts. Sweet and fresh, with excellent inner-mouth energy and floral lift. But this also boasts an opulent texture, with the sweet tannins arriving late. I find this softer than the 2005 version, but again these tannins reminded me of a Barolo.

December 2009 (Vintage 2006)

Pure blackberry and lavender on the nose. Full-bodied, with silky tannins, a pretty core of ripe fruits and chewy, fruit-coated tannins. Leaner than the 2005, but excellent all the same. Best after 2011. 450 cases made, 185 cases imported. — JS
