Finale longue.

Monica Larner, Juillet 2020 (Millésime 2016)

Drawing its fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, the Vietti 2016 Barolo Lazzarito is built like a pyramid. It is grounded by a thick base of robust fruit and power and soars upward in intensity thanks to its beautifully lifted bouquet. It reveals direct and solid lines with blackberry, plum, spice, tar, licorice, candied orange peel and truffle-infused earth. A second wave of aromas offers dark minerals and ferrous qualities such as iron ore and rust. Baroli from Serralunga d'Alba are often in a category apart thanks to their richness and sheer fruit weight. With extra aeration, Lazzarito delivers mint, balsam herb or Fernet-Branca. Production is 9,293 bottles and 300 magnums.

Antonio Galloni, Février 2020 (Millésime 2016)

The 2016 Barolo Lazzarito is another stunning wine in this range. The 2016 is the first vintage of the Lazzarito I can remember tasting in which intensely mineral notes accompany the more savory, earthy notes that are so typical of this site. Graphite, sage, dried flowers, crushed rocks, menthol, dried rose petal, mint, licorice and blood orange race out of the glass in a breathtaking, towering Barolo that hits all the right notes from the start to its chiseled, strikingly detailed finish. The 2016 Lazzarito is one of the most classically austere wines in this range. In a word: Magnificent.

This is very chewy and powerful with lots of velvety tannins that are firm and intense. It’s full and flavorful with strawberries and tar. Bark undertones. Flavorful finish. Needs time to soften. Try after 2024.

(Millésime 2018)

The 2018 Barolo Lazzarito represents Vietti's interpretation of Serralunga d'Alba, the village often associated with the most powerful wines in the appellation. The Lazzarito completes its secondary fermentation in barrique over three months and is then racked into large oak botti for an additional two years of aging. With some 8,000 bottles produced in this smaller vintage, the wine is very indicative of its geographic origins with tight black fruit, rusty nail, blood orange and earth. Compared to the others in this series, this wine delivers more lasting tannic power. A bit salty and savory now, it is well suited to long aging.

Bruce Sanderson, Octobre 2019 (Millésime 2015)

Rich and multifaceted, sporting cherry, raspberry, green tea, iron and tobacco flavors. The sweet fruit is matched to firm, dense tannins and the finish turns austere for now. Everything is in the right proportions, but patience is required. Best from 2023 through 2045.

Décembre 2020 (Millésime 2016)

Juniper, sage, green tea, cherry and tar flavors mark this savory red, which is rich, backed by a bracing structure, yet remains balanced and long on the finish. Very pure and vibrant, with a fine matrix of tannins. Best from 2024 through 2043. 774 cases made, 225 cases imported. — BS

Aldo Fiordelli, (Millésime 2017)

Vietti owns two hectares in Lazzarito, a stunning amphitheatre facing southwest on clay-limestone soil. Planted to about 4,500 plants per hectare, the vines here have an average age of 38 years. Sweet, filigreed notes of cinnamon, strawberry candy and violet unfold in the glass. The attack is polished, with ripe, crunchy tannins. The austerity of Serralunga here becomes density and volume, kept lively by lifted acidity and finishing with liquorice root and cinnamon. Perfect balance and great elegance. This will develop more complexity with ageing.

Antonio Galloni, (Millésime 2017)

Vietti's 2017 Barolo Lazzarito is absolutely gorgeous. Whatever the challenges of the growing season, they appear to have been no problem here. More than anything else, the Lazzarito impresses with its magnificent depth and stature. Super-ripe red fruit, white pepper, mint, tobacco, cured meat, spice and rose petal open gradually with time in the glass. I would not be in a rush to open bottles anytime soon. The Lazzarito has been one of the most improved wines at Vietti for a number of years. The 2017 is so captivating.

Stephen Brook, Janvier 2020 (Millésime 2016)

Although this leading producer changed ownership in 2016, the winemaking team remains unaltered. Most of its Barolos come from Castiglione Falletto, but the estate also makes Lazzarito from Serralunga, a wine aged in barriques as well as casks. The nose shows reserved red fruits and is lightly perfumed. Dense and very concentrated, it packs a punch with its hefty but ripe tannins. Assertive and very youthful, this is built to last and has impressive drive on the very long finish.

Mai 2020 (Millésime 2016)

Very complex aromas of dried strawberries, fresh mushrooms and some sour cherries. It’s full-bodied, yet tight and extremely tannic, yet ever so fine and polished. Wonderful length. Strength with finesse for a young Barolo. Better after 2022.

Monica Larner, (Millésime 2017)

A release of 8,760 bottles, the Vietti 2017 Barolo Lazzarito draws its fruit from Serralunga d'Alba and reveals a luminous garnet color. Compared to some of the others in this portfolio, the wine takes a little longer to open and express itself. It does, however, unfold to dark cherry, redcurrant, grilled herb, iron ore and candied orange peel. You need to give your glass a few extra vigorous swirls. Those rusty mineral notes build in intensity and drive the wine's medium-long finish.

A taut, structured Barolo, offering aromas and flavors of plum and cherry fruit shaded by accents of tobacco, iron, green tea and leafy underbrush. This is firm and gains power on the long finish. Best from 2025 through 2045. 774 cases made, 225 cases imported. — BS

Quite a flamboyant feel to this on the nose, showing raspberries and grainy notes, together with hints of fresh mushrooms. Some brighter passion fruit comes through with air. Medium-bodied with an intense core of vibrant fruit and youthful tannin which together, given time, will add length and breadth to the wine. Wait for this one. Try from 2024.

Bruce Sanderson, Décembre 2017 (Millésime 2013)

Smells weedy, then picks up floral, berry and tar flavors, with a solid band of tannins guarding the finish. Surprisingly balanced, showing a compact finish. Best from 2021 through 2036.

(Millésime 2018)

Vietti manages 2ha in the Lazzarito MGA, a natural amphitheatre facing southwest, here at an altitude between 260 and 390 metres above sea level on a clayey and calcareous soil. Fermentation is in stainless steel, with maceration for four weeks on the skins, followed by malolactic fermentation in large oak casks (and a small proportion in barriques), where the wine spend 30 months. This 2018 shows a precise, sweet fruit nose of raspberry and red currants, with a floral touch. Firm and crisp on the palate, it doesn't come across as over-extracted but lacks the concentration of fruit to balance the structure, resulting in a slightly raw finish. More layers expected from a Lazzarito.
