About this winery
The history of the Sancerre vineyards goes back almost a thousand years, for it was in 11th and 12th centuries that monks in the surrounding districts began to cultivate vines. From the reign of Philippe-Augustus to the reign of Louis XVI, the Kings of France delighted in Sancerre wine - "one of the most exquisite of the Kingdom", as one described it - and a 19th century devoté, Honoré de Balzac, famously paid tribute to the "generous wines" of Sancerre. Production notes
Château de Sancerre® Rouge is exclusivement made of Pinot Noir grapes. The fruit is hand-harvested on 5 hectares of vines owned by the Marnier-Lapostolle family. The vineyard is planted on clay-limestone, “caillottes”, and clay-loam soils. This terroir brings a unique freshness to the wine. Half of the wine is aged in oak barrels while the other half remains in vats for a whole year. Both wines are blended in September and bottled in November.
