About this winery

The Nuestra Señora de Remelluri Farm formerly belonged to the Toloño sanctuary. It currently covers 154 hectares, 105 of which make up the vineyard. The Sierra de Toloño mountains are in the most northerly part of the Rioja Alavesa area, with its transitional climate between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Production notes

The Remelluri estate’s origins date back to the 14th century when monks from the Toloño monastery founded a sanctuary and farm at the site. The monks later abandoned the site but hermits continued to maintain the shrine while the Real Divisa, a local community organization, maintained the farms to accommodate the needs of pilgrims who came to pray at the sanctuary. The estate eventually was spilt up and sold. The modern winery was established in 1967 when Jaime Rodríguez Salis purchased the vineyards at the heart of the former estate. Since then Remelluri has been devoted to recovering the old lands of this historic site and restoring the original vineyards.

For the last several years Remelluri augmented their estate-grown grapes with those of their neighbors in the villages of Labastida and San Vicente de La Sonsierra. When Telmo Rodríguez returned to his family estate one of his primary goals was to transition all of the estate’s flagship wines to being comprised solely of estate-grown grapes. Not one to abandon the families of growers who relied on their relationship with Remelluri, Telmo saw the opportunity change the conversation in Rioja from one of process and aging tiers to one of place, of distinction by village. The idea was to create wines that focus on the terruños of Rioja rather than on the years spent in barrels. His plan came to fruition with the 2009 vintage of Lindes de Remelluri.

Meaning “borders of Remelluri,” the Lindes de Remelluri is a wine from the villages bordering the Remelluri estate: Labastida and San Vicente. The inaugural vintage, 2009, is a blend of the wines from these two villages.

Tasting notes

Dark fruit aromas with violet tones. The palate is beautiful with a succulent texture.
