The Alpha Domus vineyard and winery were established by the Ham Family in 1990, in the Bridge Pā district of Hawke’s Bay. The range of wines consists of single vineyard varietals and classic blends produced at the on-site winery from the mature 20 hectare family vineyard. The site, twenty kilometres inland from the coast, has free draining, low fertility soils, low rainfall and consistently enjoys hot summers, usually three degrees or so higher than the rest of Hawke’s Bay. The vineyard is planted to Bordeaux varieties Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc, Merlot and Malbec as well as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Syrah and Viognier. The name Alpha Domus comes from the first names of the five founding members of the family; Anthonius, Leonarda, Paulus, Henrikus and Anthonius. Our logo was inspired by the Tiger Moth, a bi-plane used at the nearby historic Bridge Pā airfield to train pilots. The Tiger Moth has connotations of romance, history, lasting design, beauty and passion: all elements found in great wine. They are still often seen cruising the skies above the vineyard. Alpha Domus’ philosophy is to produce wines that capture the essence of their terroir and varietal character. The wines are hand crafted, balanced and display concentrated fruit flavours supported by complex nuances and are structured to allow them to mature elegantly, without obscuring the qualities that make a wine enjoyable through to the last sip.
