About this winery

Founded in 1584, Gosset is the oldest wine producer in Champagne. At that time, the wines of Champagne were still table wines produced from pinot noir and chardonnay; the wines from Ay were ranked with the wines of Beaune as the finest in France. It was not until the 18thCentury that the production of sparkling wine began; to this day Gosset uses the same antique flask bottle that was first used in the 1700’s. Today Champagne Gosset is owned by the Cointreau family, also owners of Cognac...

Tasting notes

Generous, full bodied and concentrated. This already mature wine neatly invades the palate whilst preserving its fruity, smooth and balanced nature. Hints of figs, prunes and candied cherries give the wine a warm taste whilst the floral and plant-based notes detected in the nose fade discretely, adding even greater sweetness and sophistication.

ANNE KREBIEHL,

The nose opens with the fresh ripeness of yellow apple and highlights of Granny Smith. It has beautifully subtle autolysis on the palate, deepening into notes of creamy apple crumble, Golden Delicious and Mirabelle plum, while remaining utterly strait-laced. Elegance, length and absolute freshness are inherent and quietly convincing.

2020

A fine, vivid backbone of acidity is well-meshed with flavors of black cherry, lemon curd and toasted brioche in this sleek Champagne. It's lightly plush and creamy in texture, with hints of smoke, candied ginger and honeycomb on the finish. Drink now through 2025. 2,000 cases imported. — AN

William Kelley,

Aromas of crips orchard fruit, pear and apricot, mingled with hints of fresh bread and pastry, introduce the latest release of Gosset's NV Brut Grande Réserve, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy but incisive wine that's deceptively generous but also structured to reward some bottle age.

This is very fresh and has attractively flavorful, punchy fruit presence, in a very pure mode. Strawberries and grapefruit and some pastry and spiced-biscuit to close. Drink now.

Antonio Galloni,

The NV Grande Réserve is a gorgeous entry-level wine from Gosset. Crisp, dry and resonant, the Grande Réserve offers lovely textural depth to play off the more mineral-driven notes that are so typical of the Gosset house style. All the elements come together nicely in this effortless, gracious mid-weight Champagne. This is very nicely done. Disgorged on April 26, 2017. Dosage is 8 grams per liter.

Roger Voss,

There is some fine bottle age on this cuvée. It has delicious delicate toastiness that still leaves room for the apple and white peach flavors. With its style, the Champagne is perfectly ready to drink.

Savoury nose. Real attack with some age on this. Not as subtle as some and a bit aggressive in terms of acidity. I think there are better bargains to be had among the grandes marques champagnes in Waitrose in the run up to Christmas 2019.
