About this winery

A family-owned business, L'Ecole Nº 41 was founded by Jean and Baker Ferguson. Today, the winery is owned and operated by their daughter and son-in-law, Megan and Martin Clubb. Built in 1915, the schoolhouse is located in historic Frenchtown, a small community just west of Walla Walla, Washington. Frenchtown derived its name from the many French-Canadians who settled the valley during the early 1800s. Legend has it, these men of French descent were raising grapes and producing wine. By the...

Product notes

Ferguson is L’Ecole N° 41’s newest single vineyard estate Bordeaux blend from the Walla Walla Valley. In the tradition of Perigee – Seven Hills Vineyard and Apogee – Pepper Bridge Vineyard, Ferguson reflects a unique micro-climate and geological profile. This wine shares its name with the newest estate vineyard, also called Ferguson, of which L’Ecole is the sole wine producer. Each lot was hand harvested ripe and gently crushed into 1.5 and 5 ton opentopped stainless steel fermenters. Gentle handling of the fruit through hand punch downs and gravity assisted movements were utilized throughout the entire winemaking process. The wine was cleanly racked to 100% small French oak barrels, 50% new, with five rackings over 22 months.

Tasting notes

Ferguson’s flavor profile is distinctly influenced by its basalt soil. This wine offers complex aromas of espresso, tobacco, and dark fruit with flint and graphite minerality. Intricate layers in the mid-palate are balanced with natural acidity leading to a robust and lingering finish.

June 2017 (Vintage 2014)

My favorite of the three special cuvees, the 2014 Ferguson checks in as a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 6% Malbec. It knocks it out of the park with its dark, savory, mineral-laced fruit and is full-bodied, deep, rich and concentrated on the palate. This beautiful wine has building structure

Stephen Tanzer, October 2017 (Vintage 2014)

Bright medium ruby. Rich, complex scents of blackcurrant, minerals, chocolate, wild herbs, cedar, tobacco and smoky oak. Fat and sweet but juicy too, showing lovely mineral energy to the dark fruit and tobacco flavors. A floral component adds lift and dimension to the wine. Dusty noble tannins reach the front teeth. This is still a baby but is not at all austere even today. Clubb noted that winemaker Mike Sharon is especially gentle with this wine as it's very easy to overextract.

Sean Sullivan , September 2017 (Vintage 2014)

This wine comes from a recently planted area of valley, high on a ridge top. A blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 6% Malbec, the aromas boast high-toned notes of mineral, herb, cherry, licorice and dark fruit. The cranberry and cherry flavors bring a sense of concentration and richness. It shows well now, but should only get better with some additional time in the bottle.

2017 (Vintage 2014)

Red/black fruit and barrel spice aromatics. The palate is full bodied

with lots of juicy acidity. A harmonious wine with grip and persistence.

Lots of potential.
