About this winery

The history of the Vietti winery traces its roots back to the 19th Century. Only at the beginning of the 20th century, however, did the Vietti name become a winery offering its own wines in bottle. Patriarch Mario Vietti, starting from 1919 made the first Vietti wines, selling most of the production in Italy. His most significant achievement was to transform the family farm, engaged in many fields, into a grape-growing and wine-producing business. Then, in 1952, Alfredo Currado (Luciana...

February 2020 (Vintage 2016)

The 2016 Barolo Ravera is bursting with all of the tension that is the most singular characteristic of this site. Freshly cut flowers, white pepper and mint lend energy to a wine that is very shy and tightly wound today. Then again, it is Ravera. Macerated dark cherry, lavender, mint, crushed rocks and sage race out of the glass in a potent, stunning Barolo endowed with magnificent purity and translucency. The 2016 is quite simply a stunning, breathtaking wine. Don't miss it.

Monica Larner, July 2020 (Vintage 2016)

The Vietti 2016 Barolo Ravera sees fruit from Novello in a site that faces the Novello castle up on the hill in the distance. This wine offers an impeccable balance between nose and mouth, showing immense purity and power all in one package. That harmony is sublime, and it forces the spotlight on Ravera, especially in a classic vintage such as this. This expression hits all the major cornerstones of a great Barolo, and this vintage does a great job of packaging it all together. Dark fruit, ephemeral spice, balanced acidity and elegant tannins are rolled into one beautiful wine. Production is 7,560 bottles and 300 magnums.

Dried strawberry and citrus rind, as well as subtle undertones of smoke and dried flowers. Full-bodied, yet so tight and composed with freshness and lightness, yet power, too. Long finish. This really needs time to open. Classic style. Try after 2025

Antonio Galloni, June 2021 (Vintage 2017)

  • The 2017 Barolo Ravera is a powerhouse. My impression is that the 2017 is going to develop into something truly special. It has all the energy that makes this site so distinctive, but with an extra kick of fruit density and a whole range of exotic aromatics that make for a truly drop dead gorgeous wine. Bright red/purplish fruit, rose petal, chalk and white pepper build into a finish laced with searing intensity. This is such and impressive wine.

Antonio Galloni, (Vintage 2015)

The 2015 Barolo Ravera is once again the head of the class at Vietti. Bright, sculpted and wonderfully nuanced, the Ravera is very pretty. Floral aromatics and the pointed, brilliant fruit that is such a Ravera signature are very much in evidence. Hints of blood orange, mint, crushed rocks and flowers add shades of complexity as the 2015 gradually opens up in the glass. This is one of the finer wines of the year. Don't miss it!

November 2021 (Vintage 2017)

Broad and saturated with cherry, black currant and plum flavors, this red is expansive and yet well defined. The ripe fruit is offset by nervous tannins, leaving a resonant, energetic feel on the lengthy finish. Eucalyptus, iron and tobacco notes add detail. Best from 2025 through 2047. 642 cases made, 193 cases imported

(Vintage 2018)

Vietti is one of a handful of estates to bring the Ravera MGA of Novello to the current popularity it enjoys now. Their 2018 Barolo Ravera has a smoky personality with crushed stone and pencil shavings. There is plenty of dark fruit at the back, ripe cherry and blackberry mostly, and the wine is tonic and firm in terms of its structure and tannins. The Ravera is a wine of enormous length and a finely tuned texture. Exactly 7,560 bottles were made.

(Vintage 2015)

This red is full of sweet ripe plum, cherry and tar flavors, accented by tobacco and underbrush notes. Thick, dusty tannins coat the gums and put a clamp on the finish for now, but this shows potential. Best from 2023 through 2045.

An austere style, with cherry, plum, white pepper, earth and menthol notes, this packs a lot of flavor and intensity into a taut frame, turning firm yet long on the tobacco- and mineral-tinged finish. Best from 2023 through 2043. 642 cases made, 193 cases imported. — BS

Lighter structure this year, but it’s intense, with focused red-cherry and raspberry character and spicy and mineral nuances. Medium-bodied with firm tannins and a very tight finish. This is super-compact and needs time to expand. Try from 2024.

This red leads off with a distinctive minty note allied with cherry, iron, tobacco and underbrush flavors. Turns firm and linear on the finish, with a sinewy feel, yet remains fresh and long. Very pure. Best from 2026 through 2043. 642 cases made, 193 cases imported.

Walter Speller, June 2021 (Vintage 2017)

Novello. Tasted blind. Lustrous ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Savoury cherry nose and fresh cherry fruit palate with crunchy tannins and supple acidity. Long and juicy, perfect for drinking now.

Novello. Tasted blind. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Earthy and minerally nose with sweet, raspberry top notes. Great concentration of fruit, but maintains elegance throughout. Lots of substance and juice and such fine, long tannins, but not ready by far. (WS)
